The Calhoun County Pound is dedicated to finding good, forever homes for the abandoned and homeless animals of Calhoun County. If you can provide such a home for one of the animals listed below, please contact us for more information. Applicants will be screened and may be required to have a home visit. All dogs receive distemper/parvo and rabies shots after the 7 day waiting period and are neutered or spayed, microchipped and tested for heartworm.

Donate a BedWe use Patented Kuranda Dog Beds because they are durable, chew proof and easy to clean. If you would like to donate a bed to us, click here.

We have entered into a partnership with the North Central Correctional Facility to help dogs receive basic training and increase their chances of a successful adoption. We have several dogs in the program. Look for the dogs progress below! We will take applications for them while in training. The shelters first newsletter was just put out and includes some adoption stories as well as other information. Click here to take a look!

We have gotten many inquiries about pet death and disposal options. Many local vets will offer cremation services and often ashes can be returned to the owner. There is also one private business that provides this service locally, they will also pick up the pet and return the ashes to you in an urn. Their website is www.ncn.net/~scottdev. Check with local rules and regulations for pet burial on private property.

Calhoun County Canine Shelter has been approved to begin a foster home program. Foster homes would go through the same screening as adoptive homes and would house animals ready for adoption until a permanent home is found. The foster home would be responsible for getting the dog to vet appointments as well as daily care as needed. Getting housebreaking and other basic training is also important. Foster time periods can range from days to months. If you are interested in fostering, please contact Shelly at 712-297-8323 or smaguire@calhouncountyiowa.com for more information. Fostering is a very rewarding and selfless thing to do! So many rewards will be yours!
